Did we pick a new vehicle?!

The short answer is: yes, we picked a new vehicle!

Where we started

I started this journey after selling my car kind of on a spur-of-the-moment decision. My husband and I planned to purchase a new vehicle at the end of 2022 once I graduate. He was given a work vehicle (2022 Tacoma which is gorgeous), and my car was needing some repairs so we decided we could try having only 1 personal vehicle. Knowing that there is a vehicle shortage we decided to research vehicles and order one so that we had one when needed… Well this may have been a mistake

What I have learned

I started by researching whether we should go electric, stay with gas or hybrid. Looking into the price of electric vehicles we immediately decided to go with gas or hybrid if possible. This lead me to look into the price of replacing hybrid batteries. I found the cost of replacement quite affordable, especially with the length of time batteries last.

Throughout this inquiry process, I learned all about the vehicle shortage. The shortage is mainly due to a shortage in chips, that is chips that run the computer for the engine of the vehicle. Pretty important, but also such a small thing to be causing so much of an issue.

This shortage has caused huge inflation of used car prices, making used vehicles more expensive than buying new ones. Because of this, we decided to plan to buy new. At the start of this process when I inquired about the new vehicle we decided on in early February I was told it would be about a 3-month wait. When I contacted the dealership last week I was told a 9-15month wait.. Cue the stress!!! How can we wait for 9-15months?!

Due to this we are once again looking into different vehicles.

What vehicle did we choose?!

We chose a 2022 Hybrid Rav4!! I have always wanted a Rav4, so having the research point us in the direction of one was amazing! However, due to the 9-15 month wait for the Hybrid Rav4, we have decided to look into some other options. Those options include Hybrid Ford Escape, Plug-in Sante Fe, Toyota HR-V, and the Nissan Rogue.

Now what?

  • Figure out if we are staying in Victoria with my husband staying at his current job (aka has a work truck and would be able to wait for the Rav4)
  • Are we moving to Ottawa? Could my husband use one of his familes vehicles while we wait for a new one?
  • Do we try to wait out the shortage and hope that when we need a new vehicle they will be more accsessible?
  • Do we simply wing it and just buy a vehicle when we need even if its not what we truly want
  • We should probably go and actually test drive some vehicles!

How can we use google classroom with students and to communicate with parents?

Before we can discuss how to use google classroom to communicate with parents, we must first understand how to use google classroom with our students.

Please watch the below video to find out a bit about google classroom and its uses! It is quite a lengthy video but very beneficial for new teachers first learning how to set up their google classrooms, for themselves and for their students!

Benefits of using Google Classroom

When we started to research why you should use google classroom we were overwhelmed with hundreds of articles. All of them of course had slightly different thoughts and opinions. After reading through 15+ articles we compiled a list of the top 10 benefits we felt there are to using google classroom.

How can we use google classroom to communicate with parents?

Google Classroom offers “guardian” permissions to parents. These guardians can elect to receive updates about their student’s work, including missed assignments or upcoming tests. This feature also helps parents and caregivers to know when they should follow up with students who aren’t meeting goals or completing work.

We can also use google forms to check in with students on how they feel they are doing in specific subjects and units. It is an informal way to get students’ input which we can then relay to parents.

Students’ point of progress’ can be completed in google classroom, which can then be emailed, shared, and/or printed and sent home with students. Having the online option ensures that parents have multiple modes of communication. It is also a lifesaver for those students who always lose or forget to bring papers home to their parents!

To encompass all of this information in a concise easy-to-read way we have created an infographic to email and/or print out and send to parents. In the email, there is also a short youtube video that parents can watch to help them understand how google classroom works!

Infographic for Parents

We will send out the infographic below to parents. This allows us to give parents an overview of why we have chosen to use google classroom as well as a quick overview of its benefits! This infographic will open up a conversation if some parents have questions and/or concerns about its use.

Please watch the video below for a quick overview on how to use google classroom!

Wow, How is it Week 10 already?!

Guest Lecture- Joanna Lake

I am very thankful for Joanna’s guest presentation this morning. I found her presentation not only beneficial to this course but to other courses as well. I am going to focus on some key takeaways from the guest lecture and she was amazing! I cannot wait to be able to go over the resources that she shared with us 🙂

Key take aways

-Work collaboratively with your students on everything, ie explaining assignments, creating rubrics

-Really ensure that your students understand the proficiency scale, give examples that are applicable to them

-Allow students to analyze you, give them an example to help them understand

-Give students choice on how they submit assignments, video or audio may be better for some students as opposed to a written answer

-Absolutely everything she said regarding ELA!! Unfortunately, we have not had a wonderful course experience this semester with our ELA course so I have been feeling quite unprepared for practicum. All of Joanna’s examples were incredibly helpful and applicable which is greatly appreciated.

-Always head into a class with a fresh mind, give every child a blank slate

-Build movement into your lessons

-FAIL in your practicum, this is when you can fail and have mentors to help you learn

-Content is a friendly suggestion, competencies is what we are focused on

-Single point rubrics are great!

Trevor MacKenzie

I highly encourage everyone to follow Trever Mackenzie on Instagram and/or Twitter. I started following him earlier in the semester and I have learned a ton. His videos on Instagram and youtube are always short and to the point! Check out this 1 min video below!

I am extremely grateful for all the incredible resources that have been shared throughout the past 10 weeks!!

9 to 15 month wait.. Uh oh

In preparation for this week’s blog post, I decided that I should reach out to see what the wait currently is for Rav4’s and if they have any at the dealership that we could come test drive. This conversation did not go as planned and has left me quite stressed. The transcript is attached below…

9 to 15 months is a really long wait time. Alot can change in that period of time. We are hoping to go test drive the Rav4 and discuss our options either tomorrow or during the week! Tune in to the blog next week to see what happens!

Help, I don’t know what I’m doing…

Well, technology did it again. I get so excited to try new programs, and then I get stuck on the second step. Today I was following the instructions to make my name which you see above, and boom! Right away there is a step that I cannot figure out. So what happens? I try and try, try a different way, reread the instructions and I still cannot figure it out. Eventually, with help from a classmate, I figure it out. That process made me so frustrated, mainly frustrated because every time I try something new with technology it seems so simple but then I can’t do it. Or it takes longer than I feel it should.

Do I feel this way because I grew up in the country and did not use technology as much as other millenials? Do I feel this way because I am not great at having patience? Or is it because I feel stupid when I try to learn it? Hmmm maybe I should talk to my therapist about this one!

Multi-Access Learning / Blended / Flipped Learning

Today in class we had a great guest speak! The speaker really got me thinking about all the pros and cons of utilizing technology in the classroom. For the sake of this post I am going to reflect on this class and how it is HyFlex.

I am very grateful for how flexible this course is. We can attend face to face, we can attend on zoom, and we also have open access to the plan for the week. So if zoom or in-person do not work you are still able to complete all coursework and miss a minimal amount. Today I was reflecting on how amazing this is for us as students, but also how difficult it is for our professor. Maybe difficult is not the right word, but more time-consuming for sure! My professor has to spend time each week preparing pre-class activities, during class time activities, and helpful points for our homework. In theory, after the course work is created, it should be easier to repeat this course, only having to make minor changes along the way. However, it is ALOT of work getting the course up and running. However, I know my classmates and I are very grateful. This approach takes the stress off when you are feeling unwell or maybe you have a sick dog to attend to. This works due to the nature of the course and the demographic (everyone has access to wifi and a laptop). Below I have inserted pictures from activities completed during our guest lecture.

Coding & Computation

By watching the above video you can see that Anna only finishes half of the snowflake. Why is that you ask? That is because at that point I was frustrated with how long it took me to do step 6. Coding is an amazing thing, and I do wish that I had the patience for it!

Reflecting on link to practice

In the fall I was observing at Journey Middle School in Sooke, in a grade 6 classroom. The teacher I was observing was great at using all possible tools available for them. One particular day students were using laptops to create a google slides presentation with classmates. I went over to check on a student, right away I could tell that she wasn’t working on the assigned task, I knew that she knew that but oh did she play me. I asked her to click on her assignment so that we could get started and out of nowhere a cartoon character with a sword comes running across the screen and chops up her entire assignment! And then it starts fighting with someone, running all across the screen having a sword fight. Then everything disappears! She had somehow coded her mouse to become this character, chop up her assignment, and then have a sword fight. I could not hide how impressed I was, which was her goal. She knew that someone was going to come over and ask her to get started on her assignment and then she would be able to show off her coding. This made me think about how we could allow her to use her skills while still completing the assigned task.

I have not come to a conclusion on that yet, but I do know it is important to find a way. The world around us is becoming more technology-driven by the day. However, as a millennial, I do not know as much about technology/coding as I probably should. Final story prior to chatting about computation. In the observation, class talked about previously the teacher had used coding to make her life much easier. This teacher was HUGE on student self-reflections, so at the end of the unit, she would send all the students google forms where they filled out questions on how they felt they did in the unit, their favorite part, and how they could improve. She had then made a code/ran a program, that would pull their answers and put them into a google doc. She would look over these google docs and then send them directly to the parents for the student’s point of progress! On the front end it was quite time-consuming to set up, but once the code was written it saved her tons of time!

I may have lied..Thinking about my observation classroom again the teacher was also very open about allowing students to use calculators. I found this very interesting, this was very helpful for all students. I found it interesting as some students did not attempt the operations in their heads prior to using the calculator. That is probably a discussion for another post though!

What do we do now?

Well, we are in a holding pattern right now. The two jobs my husband applied for closed this past Thursday, March 10th, so now we wait. At this point in his discussions, he has decided that he will take the military job in Ottawa if it is offered to him, and he will take the Navy job in Victoria if it is offered and the Ottawa job is not. Meaning that if both, or either of them is offered to him he will be leaving his job with Rowing Canada. As I am typing this I am realizing that maybe this post should not be public, but that’s okay! What this means is, if he gets offered either job, he will no longer have a work truck and we will have to buy a new vehicle. Will that vehicle be purchased in Victoria or Ottawa, will it be a used vehicle or a new vehicle? I am somewhat stuck on what to do my post on this week as it seems like my entire life is in a holding pattern right now. Doing our biweekly costco haul this week felt slightly different because Matt may have to move to Ottawa in 3 weeks, which significantly changes how I would grocery shop. However because I must make a post this week, I am going to research the new Tuscon hybrid that we saw downtown yesterday.

Watch the below video to learn all about the new Tucson! Below the video are two screenshots from be building and pricing out what the vehicle would cost us. It would be $3000-$4000 more expensive than the hyrbid Rav4. This puts it as a contender but the Rav4 still wins!

How much does it cost to replace my hybrid battery?

Local Repair shop vs Dealership

I found a local auto repair shop that specializes in hybrid battery repairs and replacements. According to the website getting a Toyota Rav4 battery replaced at the dealership would be approximately $5000. However, if you get it replaced at their shop you would save approximately $1000. This is cheaper than what I expected which is always good. It is also nice to know that there are options. Follow the link below to read up more on the Cowichan Auto Repair shop!

Hybrid Battery Replacement and Reconditioning

However…. will I even be living in BC in a year?

In a wild chain of events, we will be finding out if my husband got a job in Ottawa shortly.. At this point in our discussions, if he is offered the job he will be accepting it. My husband (Matt) is from Ottawa, and with the cost of living in BC getting more outrageous by the day, it seems like the best decision. Because of this, I will be pivoting slightly in my inquiry to look at the process of transferring insurance/license to Ontario. This will impact if my husband will drive our Jeep Cherokee to Ontario and I will order a new Rav4 Hybrid, or will I keep the jeep and he will order the new Rav4 to reduce transfer fees, etc.

New residents-https://www.ontario.ca/document/official-mto-drivers-handbook/vehicle-insurance-and-registration

Information copied and pasted from website-New Ontario residents have 30 days to register their vehicles. To get a permit and Ontario licence plates, go to a ServiceOntario centre. You must bring along:

  • A safety standards certificate
  • Proof of insurance
  • Vehicle Import Forms, if you have brought the vehicle in from another country
  • The vehicle permit, or ownership, from where you used to live

With this information, I will now look into how much it costs to have a vehicle safetied in Ontario. As well if there is a transfer tax fee, as currently, the Jeep is in my Husbands name. So it may be better if it stays in his name. My husband (Matt) would be moving to live with his parents or sister while I finish school, or when it makes the most sense to sell our house here and buy a new house in Ottawa, but that’s a whole other discussion!! It is applicable though because neither of us can be without a vehicle and with the vehicle shortage right now it takes approximately two months to get a new vehicle if you order from the factory. So in theory it makes the most sense for me to keep the Jeep in BC and for Matt to borrow a family member’s vehicle while he waits for the Rav4 to come in. OR my most recent thought is that he could borrow a family member’s vehicle, I would keep the Jeep, order the Rav4 to Victoria, and then in our school break in June, I could drive the Jeep and our dog to Ottawa as we would prefer our dog not to fly. As you can see there are many factors in this inquiry. The largest factor at the moment is that Matt has not even been interviewed for the job yet, however they reached out 3 months ago asking him if he would like the job when it was posted. The posting closes on March 10th, with the earliest start date being April 1st, so we will have answers/decisions to make in the next few weeks.

Costs to transfer Registration from BC to Ont

According to google, a safety inspection costs $60-$90. This is assuming there are no repairs needed on the vehicle. The below link gives a list of everything they check the vehicle for. https://www.ontario.ca/page/safety-standards-certificate#section-5

I have not been able to find any information on transfer tax yet. My fingers are crossed that this means you do not have to!

What is accessibility?

Accessibility: All learners have the same opportunities to acquire resources, interact with materials, engage in activities and create content, regardless of disability

Personal Experience

In my link2practice in the fall semester, there were three students in the class that were color blind. I found myself saying things, or trying to help them in ways that were not actually helpful to them. When using manipulatives in class, specifically colorful shapes to learn ratios we needed to change our language to get the students to group objects by shape and not by color. Like many things we have had to relearn throughout our lives, I needed to relearn the language that I used.

How much did you know about digital accessibility prior to this week? Was this ever a topic you considered previously?

In my link2practice we also had a handful of students with IEP’s. For two of the students, their IEP’s included them having the option to type all of their assignments instead of handwriting them. This was easy for the teacher to accommodate as there were very minor changes she needed to make to assignments to ensure accessibility. This was the first time I had ever considered this topic.

Why do you think many digital accessibility practices aren’t more well-known or commonly used?

As with most things, we learn by being exposed to techniques/practices. My undergrad was a degree that would not be considered flexible, or accessible. Because of that, I was not exposed to many digital accessibility practices. I am privileged that I do not have any accessibility needs, so I have not been exposed to many practices.

Why do you think many digital accessibility practices aren’t more well-known or commonly used?

At this point in this post, I sound like a broken record, but I feel that it is a lack of awareness. I will use closed captioning as an example. I did not realize how important it was to use closed captioning on everything possibly. Instagram stories, for example, can be very difficult for someone with a cochlear implant to hear, but having closed captioning allows them to enjoy the store as well. I learned this through a contestant on one of my favorite shows having a cochlear implant (CI) and speaking openly about how her CI impacts her life and things that you can do to assist. If I had not been exposed to someone with a CI there is a good chance I would not have realized that it was an easy way for me to make my posts and stories accessible.

Watch the video below for some quick tips on how to make your class accessible!

Learning how to put closed captioning on videos!

The below video is a video I created for a course earlier in the semester, I was shocked at how easy it was to add closed captioning. This is a quick, easy way for you to make any video accessible for your learners!

Hybrid Rav4

Did you watch the 30min video at the end of the last post?! Probably not and that’s okay, I will tell you all about the Rav4 Hybrid. In this post, we will analyze some websites and articles to come up with a pros and cons list for the Hybrid Rav4. (This pro/con list is based on the 2020 model)

https://www.car-buying-strategies.com/Toyota/2020-RAV4-Hybrid.html

ProsCons
Amazing Fuel Economy
Front passenger seat not comfortable?
Comfortable and Relaxing seatsBrakes feel artificial
Ample Cargo SpaceTouchscreen looks outdated
Minimal Costs to upgrade from gas
to Hybrid
Some controls are out of reach
All-wheel drive (AWD)
Great height, making it very
accessible
Cabin is Spacious
Easy to use controls

The above video gives an in-depth look into the fuel economy of the 2021 Hybrid Rav4. With the price of gas this week hitting $1.80 per liter this Hybrid is looking more appealing by the day. Finally, we are going to start researching the battery life of this hybrid engine.

I did not know what I was expecting, but I was shocked to see that a typical hybrid battery only lasts 80,000-100,000km. The article below states, “However, in 2019, the manufacturer announced that, from the 2020 model year, it was extending its hybrid battery warranty to 10 years from the date of first use, or 150,000 miles.” Next week we will dig deeper into what affects battery life, as well as how much the battery costs to replace!
